Can I be
an organ donor at any age ?
Yes, neither your age nor your state of
health should prevent you from signing a donor card. It is up to the medical
team to judge the state of the organs and their possible use. There are 70 or 80
years old donors... What can you say about a 103 years old woman who gave her
eyes and an another person of 93 years old who gave her liver ?
Can a
person who died in an accident give their vital organs ?
No, in the case
of a sudden death, only tissues like eyes, cardiac valves, bones, articulations
and skin can be given. The vital organs donors should be dead cerebrally and
artificially kept alive after grave lesion in the brain or after a spontaneous
cerebral hemorrhage.
What is the religious attitude to organ donation
and transplantation ?
Most of the world's religions openly support the
gift of organs and recognize transplantation as a victory over disease. Indeed,
western religions consider organ donation an act of great charity.
When I consent to become an organ donor, should I only sign the organ
donor card ?
No, it is important to sign the organ donor card but after,
you must advise the members of your family of your intention to make a gift of
your organs when you die. Next, you choose three (3) of them who approve of your
decision and tell them that you want to put their names and telephone numbers on
your organ donor cards. These people must sign the form required by the hospital
to authorize the organ donation.
What does the organ donation give to
the afflicted families ?
Most of the families who consent to the organ
donation of a loved one said it helped them to pass through the period of
mourning by giving a special sense to the loss of the loved one by permitting to
save or improve lives of the others.
Will the organ donation involve
us in great expenses ?
The organs and tissue removal doesn't bring any
financial costs to the family. But as in
any death, the family will pay the
funeral costs.
Can the body of organ donor be viewed normally ?
The organs and tissue removal is made in the same conditions of respect
and dignity of any surgical operation. Afterward, the body can be viewed
normally.
What is the cerebral death ?
The cerebral death
happens when the brain doesn't function anymore the necessary impulses to make
the heart and the lungs function. Without the assistance of the respirator, the
heart will stop beating spontaneously after a moment.
